Cu toate ca mai multe site-uri mari, precum Youtube.com sau Digg.com vor sa renunte la suportul pentru web-browserul Internet Explorer 6 (in primul rand din cauza vulnerabilitatilor pe care acesta le prezinta, in al doilea rand pentru ca are deja 8 ani si alte 2 versiuni IE au fost lansate de atunci), Microsoftul a anuntat ca va continua sa asigure suport pentru acesta atata timp cat Windows XP (OS-ul in care IE6 este inclus) se afla in perioada de suport prelungita (adica pana in aprilie 2014).

Totodata Microsoft a explicat si de ce retragerea suportului pentru IE6 nu este inca luata in calcul: deoarece multi utilizatori ai acestui browser nu stiu cum, nu pot (referire la cei care folosesc IE6 la servici) sau nu vor sa upgradeze la o versiune mai noua. In plus, Microsoft a declarat si ca:

The engineering point of view on IE6 starts as an operating systems supplier. Dropping support for IE6 is not an option because we committed to supporting the IE included with Windows for the lifespan of the product. We keep our commitments.

Chiar daca IE6 a fost catalogat ca facand parte din primele 25 cele mai proaste produse tech/software din toate timpurile (mai exact, ocupa locul 8) si este recomandat ca toti utilizatorii IE sa upgradeze la ultima versiune (Internet Explorer 8), trebuie sa se tina cont si de faptul ca folosirea unui anumit browser tine direct de vointa persoanei responsabile pentru PC-ul (sau, mai ales, PC-urile) pe care este folosit.

In June 2004, the U.S. Computer Emergency Readiness Team (CERT) took the unusual step of urging PC users to use a browser–any browser–other than IE. Their reason: IE users who visited the wrong Web site could end up infected with the Scob or Download.Ject keylogger, which could be used to steal their passwords and other personal information. Microsoft patched that hole, and the next one, and the one after that, and so on, ad infinitum.
