Bad news for users Google Reader, Yesterday Google officially announced closing this service starting with the date of July 1, 2013. The announcement was made both on Google blog, where closing Google Reader was integrated into "spring cleaning", as well as on the official Google Reader blog, where it is briefly explained the reason for this decision.
There are two simple reasons for this: usage of Google Reader has declined, and as a company we’re pouring all of our energy into fewer products. We think that kind of focus will make for a better user experience.

Although there are still enough Google Reader users, it seems that its decline was accelerated by popularity increasingly larger a social networks, like Facebook or Twitter, these serving newer and straighter substitute for RSS (rich site summary). While some internet users prefer to rely on RSS services, like Google Reader, to pull together information which interests them from Internet, increased the number of those who rely strictly on sharing on social networks to discover interesting articles and/or websites.
How there are still 3 months until when Google Reader will be closed, its users have plenty of time to either find one RSS replacement (for example Feedly, FeedDemon or Pulse), or to sign one of the petitions which appeared not even a few hours after the Google announcement (petition Google: Keep Google Reader running tightened in just a few hours over 80,000 signatures) and hope they will be listened to. If you opt for the first version, you can use Google Takeout to you transfer the contents from Google Reader to the new RSS service chosen.
