Who thought that he would never catch this day, well, he was sorely mistaken: on March 15 Microsoft will close one of the the most popular Instant Messaging clients, namely Windows Live Messenger (formerly known as MSN). The good news is that it will be replaced by another popular one client IM, Skype, bought by Microsoft in May 2011, but there are probably enough nostalgic users who use WLM for a decade or two, and who would have preferred not to be forced to give it up.
Microsoft he announced the other day, through e-mails, all Windows Live Messenger users as after the date of March 15, 2013 they will no longer be able to log in to the respective IM client, instead they will be notified to do so upgrade to Skype, which they will be able to log in using WLM user and password, and where all contacts from the old IM client will be imported automatically.

On 15th March 2013 we are retiring the existing Messenger service globally (except for mainland China where Messenger will continue to be available) and bringing the great features of Messenger and Skype together. Update to Skype and sign in using a Microsoft Account (same as your Messenger ID) and all your Messenger contacts will be at your fingertips. You’ll be able to instant message and video chat with them just like before, and also discover new ways of staying in touch with Skype on your mobile and tablet.
Windows Live Messenger users we recommend them to install Skype from now on, to be able to get used to this IM client more easily (of course, valid only for those who don't already use it, considering its increased popularity in recent years). If you already have one Skype cont, log in to it to view that Skype contacts, as well as those on Windows Live Messenger (to access contacts from both accounts, i shall you must log in with the WLM user, otherwise only Skype contacts will be displayed).
