Where is the difference between size and size on disk

Size” and “Size on disk” refers to space occupied by a file on disk (HDD) and at the real size of the file. If you have a large volume folder (say over 2GB) in which you have many files .doc, .txt, .php, etc…you will notice at “Properties” that the space occupied on disk by this folder (size on disk) is larger than the real volume of files (SIZE).

In the picture below we have the folder “Demo” which contains 67,155 files grouped in 8,958 folders. The difference in size between “size” and “size on disk” It is very large. SIZE: 3.17GB / Size on disk: 6.98GB.

The same folder “Demo” with almost the same number of files and folders (these differences can be ignored) but stored on another HDD , we observe in the image below as the difference between”size” and “size on disk” It is much smaller than in the previous case. SIZE: 3.17GB & Size on disk: 3.35GB.

How and where does this difference from?

Size” refers to the real size of a file, again “Size on disk” refers to the space busy on the HDD by a file. Volume difference “Size on disk” In the two examples above, it is given by the size of the volume units (cluster size) of the HDDs.
You've probably noticed that when you want to Form a partition, if you choose NTFS, you have some options, including “Allocation unit size” (Set to be the size of a unity of disk – 512 bytes, 1024 bytes, 2048 bytes, 16 kilobytes, 32 kilobytes, 64 kilobytes, etc).

Bun…Let's say you set for a HDD partition 64 kilobytes / unitate. Because these units are indivisible, and on a unit can not be stored more files, if you have two small files of 2 kilobytes each (4 kilobytes in total) they will occupy on disk 128 kilobytes,
In order to save you as much space as possible, it is recommended that small files that are not commonly used, be archived (.zip, .rar).

This post will be continued soon with a tutorial in which it will be presented in detail the component of an HDD. Types of HDD-uri and Technical details.

  1. Explain why this is not who understands it:
“Well, let's say it set it for an HDD Kilobytes 64 / unit partition. Since these units are indivisible and the unit will not be able to store more files, if it has two small files of each 2 kilobytes (Kilobytes 4 in total) that will occupy Kilobytes disc 128,
To save disk space that is recommended in small files that are not routinely used to be archived (.zip, .rar).”

  2. Hello, buy a SSD album supposedly high capacity, but when it reaches 30GB the following it records it corrupt, it records it but if it is a video it is not seen, if it is a rar it does not recognize it. NTFS and also exfat format it with different assignment unit configurations but nothing
