Office 2007 and Office 2010 have the possibility to open document create in older versions of Office (2003 for example) in Compatibility Mode. The only drawback is that documents in older format does not benefit from all the functions available for documents created with Office 2007/Office 2010. To solve this problem, the only solution is to use the Convert feature (available in both Office 2007 and Office 2010) to convert old-style Office documents into new-format Office documents. Below we will explain exactly how you can convert one document Word Office 2003 in Office 2010 and in Office 2007, the conversion method differs from one edition to another, but is the same for all Office applications from a single edition.
How to convert a Word 2003 document to Word 2010
- when we open a file Word 2003 in MS Word 2010, in the title bar, immediately after the document name, is displayed [Compatibility Mode] (also valid for Office 2003 documents open in Office 2007)
- after opening the document in the old format in Word 2010, click on the button File from the top left corner
- Select Convert from the displayed menu (middle panel)
- will be displayed an warning message which informs you that the document in the old format will be converted into one in the new format, etc. check Do not ask me again about converting documents Then click on OK to do the conversion
- Give it again click on File and select Exit from the menu
- when you will be asked if you want to save the changes, click on Yes
- you will notice how the document will change its extension from .doc in .docx
How to convert a Word 2003 document to Word 2007
- to convert a document Word 2003 in format Word 2007, open the document in old format in Compatibility Mode Then click on Office button in the upper left corner of the document
- Then click on Convert
- then tick Do not ask me again about converting documents and click on Yes
- click again on the button Office, then click on Exit Word.
- in the open dialog, click on Save to save the document in a new format. You will notice that the document will no longer have the extension .doc, ci .docx
After conversion, the functions available for documents created in 2007 or 2010 format will also be available for modified files.
Note: Keep in mind that the conversion procedure of an old format Office file into a new format Office file replaces the original file. If you want to keep a copy of the file in the old format, it is recommended to make a copy before converting. Files converted to Office 2007 or Office 2010 format will not be able to be opened in Office 2003 unless they are saved later in this format.
