How can we change the default location to install modern applications in Windows 8

Every time we install a new application in Windows, we are asked which one it is the location where we want it to be installed (by default, the location is the folder Program Files FROM the root directory). Well, in Windows 8 this is not valid for Modern applications, which we install from Windows Store. And where party on which Windows 8 is installed does not have enough allocated space-bar, during this time it will crowd again the operating system it will move harder and harder (the same scenario also applies if I installed Windows 8 on a SSD, which normally have one limited storage space).

Desi in Windows 8 there is no option to change the installation location for modern applications, this can be quickly solved with the help of some symlink-burn (symbolic links) that allow accessing files stored on a different partition from the partition on which the system is installed.

In order to move the installation location of modern applications on another partition (or other hard disk) we will have to use Command Prompt-ul (rolled with Administrator privileges).

Make sure first that you do not have any modern applications open (also these it doesn't have to run in the background either!), then open Command Prompt (taste cmd in the Start Screen, right-click on it and select Run as administrator from the options displayed at the bottom of the screen) and type the following orders (be very careful that they are written exactly as in this article, otherwise metro applications will not work):

  • the first order allows taking control (take ownership) on installation directory of modern applications, Windowsapps, located in C:Program Files

takeown /F “C:Program FilesWindowsApps” /A /R

cmd1
  • assuming you want to move the installation location of the applications from the Windows Store on another partition, let's say D, type the following command to copy the WindowsApps directory to the partition that you chose for installation

robocopy “C:Program FilesWindowsApps” “D:WindowsApps” /E /COPYALL /DCOPY:DAT

cmd2
  • make sure that it was copied without problems to the desired partition (in case they appear fall, you will have to repeat the command), then delete the original installation directory, located in C:

rmdir /S “C:Program FilesWindowsApps”

  • then create symlink-ul between the two folders, because Windows 8 can access modern applications from the new location of installation

mklink /D “C:Program FilesWindowsApps” “D:WindowsApps”

cmd3

Once the process is complete, modern applications from the Windows Store will be installed and executed from the new location.

Note: to avoid possible errors after updating modern applications, it is recommended to uninstall and reinstall them in the new location.
